OUR PROGRAM

¡Adelante Latina! believes that every student should have the opportunity to attend college and our program strives to help make that possible for all of our students.

Our program meets after school two days a week: one of the two days, students attend class with students in their grade taught by a professional English teacher, who focuses on improving their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. On the other day of the program, each student has her own volunteer tutor, who works with her on ¡Adelante Latina! classwork and also provides assistance with school work, as necessary.  Seniors focus on college and scholarship applications.

Math and science tutoring is available as needed for school homework assistance, in addition to virtual Zoom math SAT class on Saturdays.

Students are encouraged to participate in cultural outings such as trips to museums, theater performances, and visits to colleges, arranged by ¡Adelante Latina!

In the spring, the program assists students in finding a paid summer internship in a field of their choice.  In past summers, our students have held internships at Centro Sol of Johns Hopkins University (Center for Health and Opportunity for Latinos), Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs, YouthWorks (of the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development), labs at the University of Maryland Medical Campus and the prestigious MERIT Program (Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens), and creative internships with Art With a Heart, The Creative Alliance, and Dent Education. Several students have also participated in summer research in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

National First-Generation Student Day was celebrated with a "poetry slam," where students read their poems reflecting their thoughts about being the first in their families to attend college.

Additionally, students have the opportunity to attend a one-week “College Boot Camp” at Notre Dame University of Maryland where they experience dorm life, visit classrooms and labs, hear speakers in a variety of professional fields and visit other colleges in the area.

For our growing alumnae cohort, we provide ongoing support through monthly communications, scholarship and academic advice, social gatherings.

For the families of our students, we provide support and resources on financial literacy, access to healthcare, legal and education advice on an as-needed basis
